What is The Summit?

Shaping the Future Summit Videos

How much time do you think about the future? Or let’s put it this way: How much time do you think about the role you are going to play in shaping the future?

This is the time and the place to be asking that question and coming up with an answer. The Schreyer Honors College believes that the leaders of the future are right here at Penn State. They are in classrooms and research labs where seeds of ideas are starting to take root. They are on stage and at town halls giving voice to the visions of new realities. They are in far off places doing the kinds of hands-on work in the field that leads to discovery and innovation.

The SHC also believes that the best way to prepare to lead is to learn from those who have led and who want to share their experience, their vision, and their wisdom.

To put successful leaders of today front and center before those who will achieve great success tomorrow, the Schreyer Honors College is holding the “Shaping the Future Summit,” a yearlong conversation on the issues and challenges to be addressed in the coming years. Programs held throughout the academic year will lead up to the Summit, the keynote event which will bring a global leader to Penn State.

The focus of the inaugural “Shaping the Future” Summit is “The Impact of Innovation,” and Dr. Peter Diamandis, entrepreneur, best-selling author, and the co-founder and CEO of the X Prize Foundation, has been selected to deliver the keynote address on April 1, 2014.

Between now and then, special events are planned to get the entire Penn State community thinking about the future across disciplines and interests. Topics include the future of technology, entrepreneurship, healthcare, and sustainability.

On April 1, a full day is being planned, including a research showcase highlighting the projects Penn State undergraduates are working on in labs and libraries across the University.

Join us at the Summit to shape the future.

Dr. Peter H. Diamandis believes the future is bright.

The commercial space pioneer, entrepreneur, and best-selling author sees endless possibilities for resource development, economic advancement, and technological achievement. His personal motto: "The best way to predict the future is to create it yourself."

Dr. Diamandis' futurist initiatives include his leadership as chairman and CEO of the X Prize Foundation, best known for its $10 million Ansari X Prize for private spaceflight. He is the author of the New York Times best seller "Abundance: The Future is Better Than You Think," a 2013 reading selection for the Schreyer Honors College's annual summer reading program.

Dr. Diamandis is also the executive chairman of Silicon Valley-based Singularity University and co-founder and co-vice chairman of Space Adventures, a space tourism company that has sent seven private citizens on missions to the International Space Station.

In the summer of 2013, Planetary Resources, a company that Dr. Diamandis co-chairs, raised more than $1 million in a crowdfunding campaign for the development an Earth orbit space telescope to identify mineral-rich asteroids to be targeted for mining in space.

Dr. Diamandis earned an undergraduate degree in molecular genetics and a graduate degree in aerospace engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School. He has won multiple awards, starting with first place in the Estes rocket design contest when he was an eighth grader. Since then, his awards have included the 2007 Arthur C. Clarke Award for Innovation, the 2006 Lindbergh Award, and the 2006 Neil Armstrong Award for Aerospace Achievement and Leadership.
